On a tough, cold night to get in a groove, they were solid. Trent Lacroix had a triple and a single and 4 runs scored. Alex Hall 2 hits, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Tigers 21 - Cubs 3 4/28 Hats off to the 2008 expansion Chicago Cubs for giving it their all while learning on the job. It is a tough challenge for them being all new to the majors. From this writers viewpoint although the scores shows different they actually played a good game with some fine defensive plays along with some that need work. Some Firsts for the Cubs : First Cub hit by Malik Bruton, along with another single. Cubs first run scored by Andrew Toutant and the Cubs first RBI goes to Spencer Rocho. The Tiger bats came to play today with almost every player contributing at the plate. Led by Trevon Godfrey's first inning 3 run home run rocket to center along with a bullet triple & 4 RBI. Nick Mazzola went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, as did Grant Mercer with his first major league RBI. Joe Ciaravino went 4 for 4 with 3 doubles & 5 RBI, Noah Varicalli added a RBI single. Dillon Webb Continued his fine hitting with 2 hits & 2 RBI, while Mike Duquet added a RBI single. Ryan Mazzola added 2 hits with a RBI while Devin Palmer added 2 hits & 2 RBI & Garrett Gersch had 2 hits with 2 RBI. As you can see the Tigers scored the runs by a lot of hitting by everyone. No cheap runs tonight. Joe Ciaravino started on the mound tonight throwing 50 pitches in 2 innings while striking out 4 allowing 3 runs. Nick Mazzola pitched the final 2 innings ( 38 pitches ) while striking out 6 allowing no runs. GREAT TEAM EFFORT !!!!!!!

Cardinals 3 - White Sox 2 4/29 Nick "max" Maxwell struck-out 11 Sox and walked only two as he pitched the Cards to a well played win. "Max" entered the top of the sixth at 84 pitches, worked the count full before giving up the Sox second run on a solo homer by Daniel Robinson to right center. The sox pitcher ( Marquis Harper ) was throwing a similar game and the Cards were kept off balance until the bottom of the third when they put two on the board to go up 2 to 1. The Cards got key hits by Larry Upshur (2b) and J.J. Jackson and Eric Cichocki reached on a fielder's choice and also singled. The game was on the line following the lead-off homer in the sixth. Reliever, Nick Ellery, had location problems in the frigid, windy conditions and walked the two batters he faced. The 'Birds turned to Tyler Ciechanowski to get them out of the jam, which he did, but only after walking the bases full. Tyler struck-out the next two batters and on a gutsy gamble, the sox tried a delayed steal to tie the game, only to have TY throw out the runner at home to nail down the win. Rob Zurawski had a nice catch in deep left center to end the second and end a scoring threat.

Cardinals 14 - Pirates 2 4/30 The cardinals were held in check until the top of the fourth when Connor Perreault doubled to start a (6) run rally that included five hits. Eric Cichocki (2-4,2b,4rbi) and Larry Upshur (2-4,1run,1rbi) had great games at the plate and in the field. Larry pitched four strong innings, scattering six hits, striking out 7,while walking only one Buc. Eric was solid behind the plate and wasn't challenged. Jerome J.J. Jackson got the cards rolling in the fifth with a walk. J.J. (1-1,3bb,3runs) ran the bases with abandon. At the plate the birds patients paid-off with 7 walks in the fifth, while scoring eight times. Connor finished the game on the mound, blanking the Pirates to end the game after 5 innings. Nobody knows the last time the Cards won three in a row but it appears they can play with anyone this season. Fine pitching by Cam Keuning was wasted tonight as the wheels on the Pirate defense fell off and rolled away. Brian Echols continued his hot hitting, going 3 for 3 with 2 doubles. One off the fence. Bobby Root got a double and was durable behind the plate. Tom Meyering was rock solid at 3b tonight making a couple of nice plays.
Pirates are like super balls......we will
bounce back.

White Sox
17 - Cubs 7 4/30 Brian McNamara, Jay Smolinski and Malik Bruton scored 2 runs and Andrew Cyburt had a key hit and 2 RBI's. Every Cub has been working hard and this expansion team has shown improvement in every game. Cubs fans appreciate the good sportsmanship shown by the Tigers and the White Sox these past couple of games in not running up the score. Rory McNamara had another solid game at catching, and is just one of the
young members of Cubs nation looking forward to
a season of fun and learning.

Yankees 4 - Tigers 1 5/01 A pitcher's duel between Ron Williams of the Yankees and Trevon Godfrey of the Tigers each throwing 85 pitches. Neither giving up an earned run only 1 hit by each was surrendered. Devin Palmer came in for relief and some costly errors led to the 3 run rally of the Yankees in the fifth. A total of 5 unearned runs in this game. The Tigers really missed their lead off hitter Nick Mazzola tonight and his brother Ryan. Coach D was impressed the way the young talent is producing on this team. The 3 games between these 2 teams will be real fun and exciting. The hitters in today's contest were Jon Bevier (1 hit ), Ronnie Williams (1 hit ), Jess Brian roped a single off reliever Devin Palmer, while Garrett Gersch had the only hit for the Tigers tonight. Great job for both teams, keep up the hard work and see you at the finish line!

Cardinals 12 - Giants 5 5/02 The Cardinals continued their hot play with a commanding 12-5 win over the Giants. After taking the lead with two in the first the Cards surrendered it in the top of the third on Derrick Vaughn's grand slam off Starter Rob Zurawski, Rob pitched great in his brief appearance and added more depth to the Redbirds deep bull-pen. J.J. Jackson came in to slam the door on the Giants. The third was the big inning for the Cards the as well. Bouncing back following the grand slam the Birds put together five hits and a walk to score 5 runs and re-take the lead 7-5. Two of those hits were back to back doubles by Connor Perreault (1-3, 2rbi,1run) and Rob Zurawski (2-3,1run). Eric Cichocki had another solid all-around game going 3-4 at the plate and throwing out two runners from behind it. The next game is May 8th and the Cards hope to push their record to 5-1! GO CARDS!!!!!

Pirates
15 - Cubs 0 5/02
Sean Goolsby did not allow a hit today.
Brian Jaminet had 3 hits.
Casey Livingston had 4 singles and had an excellent game as catcher. Nehemiah Myers went 2 for 2.
The thing that impressed the Pirate
coaching staff the most about the Cubs is how well the whole team
works in the field,
playing good fundamental baseball. Well coached. Hats off to the Cubs, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
